Managing Mass Timber: From Forest to Future
Mass timber is a distinct class of engineered wood products (EWPs), typically characterized by large wood panels for wall, roof and floor construction, including structural beams and columns. Construction using mass timber has been growing in popularity in the United States. As of March 2024, there were 2115 mass timber projects in the design phase, under construction, or already constructed. This is up from 439 projects in September 2018 and only 26 projects in 2013. It is evident from the exponential growth and proliferation of mass timber structures, that the next generation of designers and builders will inevitably work with this material. It is paramount that we educate this next generation of professionals on this relatively modern way of building. This traveling exhibit by Dr. Anthony Mirando and Dr. Lameck Onsarigo and funded by the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB), is an effort aimed at meeting this goal.
