Artificial Intelligence Applications for Construction Management
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines and procedures that exhibit traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving. Construction management provides a project’s stakeholders with effective management of the project's schedule, cost, quality, safety, scope, and function. Even though AI is perceived as a very recent development, it should be noted that several AI applications were developed for construction management over the last decades. The AI applications developed at Illinois Tech’s program in Construction Engineering and Management in the last three decades will be reviewed in this talk. These applications include expert systems developed in 1990-2000, prediction systems developed in 2000-2010, and management enhancements developed in 2010-2020 that make use of sensors, lasers, and UAVs. These developments pursued at Illinois Tech may constitute only a tiny fraction of the many developments that took place in the last decades, but they certainly indicate that the future is wide open for more ambitious and impactful developments.
Dr. David Arditi is currently Professor of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. He is the founder and Director of the Construction Engineering and Management Program and of the Engineering Management Program at Illinois Tech.
Professor Arditi’s area of expertise covers all aspects of construction project management, engineering, and support. Dr. Arditi and his research associates have published close to 400 research papers in refereed national and international journals and in peer reviewed conference proceedings. According to Google Scholar, their papers received over 12,000 citations and an h-index of 64 as per July 2021. He is currently serving on the editorial board of 13 journals in the field of construction project management and is Editor-in-Chief of /Buildings/. Dr. Arditi is an active member of several professional societies including CMAA, ASCE, AACE, and PMI. He was elected to the College of Fellows of CMAA in 2013.
